Motherland, Zamalek Art Gallery, Cairo 2020

Egyptian-born British sculptor Sam Shendi’s (Sam Shendi Sculptor) latest exhibition, Motherland, marks his debut into the Egyptian art scene after years of work based in the UK. Shendi’s work, which is firmly based in what he calls “modernist morphology,” is the result of a careful blend of representation and abstraction, melting the literal image into one’s impression of it. By reducing the human body to a container, the artist allows his creations to become focused on an emotion, letting the feeling of the piece come to the forefront rather than its physical form. His latest collection, which features life-sized sculptures, uses the associations and memories we’ve formed with children’s toys with the utilitarianism of industrial design, bringing about an off-beat vibrancy in his works.

The ‘Motherland’ exhibition will be held at Zamalek Art Gallery from October 11th to November 2nd.
